This quote speaks to the idea that every generation has a unique purpose or mission, shaped by the historical, social, and political context of thier time. This mission is not always clear-cut or clear – so the term ‘relative opacity’. It may be obscured by societal pressures, misinformation or lack of awareness. Thus, it needs to be discovered through introspection and analysis.Once this mission is identified, each generation has two choices: either fulfill it by effecting change and progress in alignment with this purpose; or betray it by ignoring their responsibilities towards society and future generations. The fulfillment of this mission often requires courage, determination and collective action.
In today’s world context where we face issues like climate change, racial injustice or economic inequality among others; our generation’s mission could be said to address these pressing matters. we are tasked with finding innovative solutions to mitigate global warming as an example; fighting against systemic racism; working towards more equitable economic systems etc.
On a personal development level too this quote holds relevance. Each individual is born into a specific time period with its own set of challenges and opportunities which shapes one’s life purpose. This could range from innovating in technology sector due to rapid digitalization age we live in; being an advocate for mental health as of rising awareness around it etc.
However discovering what our personal ‘mission’ is can often be clouded by societal expectations or self-doubt (‘relative opacity’). But once we identify what truly resonates with us – our values & passions aligned with the needs of our times – we have two choices just like on generational level: Either work towards fulfilling that calling despite obstacles (fulfill) OR ignore that inner voice & continue on conventional paths (betray).
So essentially Frantz Fanon encourages us all – as individuals & as part of our generation – to seek out our unique missions amidst confusions (‘opacity’), then make conscious choice whether to pursue them bravely or shy away from them.
